Project Overview

Rockwell Nova was designed by Frank Hinman Pierpont in 1934. This font was chosen because it mimicked the font shown on screen during the show, Hannibal, as well as mimicking the font of a script used for the show. This calendar follows the NBC show, Hannibal, through its first season. I chose to focus on the moments in which Will Graham, one of the main characters, is slowly deteriorating and becoming sicker, both physically and mentally. The center clock is the only constant in the design just as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Will’s therapist, is Will’s only constant. But as their relationship grows, so does Hannibal’s manipulation of Will and everyone around Will. The design shows how Will becomes more and more vulnerable; blacking out, losing time, auditory hallucinations, and visual hallucinations.

Process:

I began by researching the scripts from the show and pulling quotes from each episode. I wanted the theme of Will Graham’s deterioration to be present within the design as well as the quotes and treatment of the type. I chose the image of a clock as the central theme because in the plot of Hannibal, the clock becomes a symbol of Will Graham’s deterioration as well as Hannibal’s manipulation of Will. For each month, there is a central clock with the moving hour hand to count the months. In the beginning, the page format has a grounding grid that slowly deteriorates and floods into chaos. The red numbers symbolize the number of deaths in each episode. On the left side of each month is the name of the episode as well as its definition. On the right side is a quote I chose to embody the episode’s plot and aligned the most with Will Graham’s mental state. I stayed simplistic in the color palette to mimic the show’s title card introduction of white, red, and black.
